Richard Arthur Wollheim was born in London on May 5, 1923. He was educated at Balliol College, Oxford University. He taught philosopy at University College, London from 1949-1982. He also taught at Columbia University from 1982-1985, and at University of California, Berkeley from 1985 until his death on November 4, 2003. He held a chair in philosophy and humanities at U.C. Davis from 1989-1996. His areas of interest were painting, aesthetics, psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, Melanie Klein and the philosophy of art. Among his books are Sigmund Freud (1971), The Mind and its Depth (1993), On the Emotions (1999), Art and Its Objects (1968), On Art and the Mind (1973) and Painting as an Art (1987).
